Athleta Magazine had the privilege of attending the exclusive unveiling of Kappa's 25th-anniversary celebration for the Kombat™ 2000 jersey—an event that offered not just a look back at a design milestone, but a deep cultural exploration into one of the most innovative football jerseys ever made.

The Kappa Kombat™ 2000 jersey turns 25 this year, and the Italian brand is commemorating the occasion with a cultural deep dive into the kit that revolutionized technical sportswear. Originally developed by Kappa’s Research & Development center and worn by the Italian national team at UEFA EURO 2000, the Kombat™ was the world’s first football jersey to feature “stop stopping” technology—an anti-holding design that gave players an extra 30 centimeters of freedom thanks to its elastic fabric. This innovation improved both athlete performance and referee visibility, establishing Kappa as a true pioneer in functional design.

To mark the anniversary, Kappa has transformed its Milan headquarters at BasicVillage into a fully immersive football space. The centerpiece is a special exhibition that retraces over 40 years of brand history—from Kappa’s first sponsorship deal with Juventus FC in 1979 to its fusion with lifestyle and streetwear culture today. On display: rare jerseys, historic memorabilia, photographs, and firsthand testimonials that trace the brand’s deep connection with the Beautiful Game and its cultural resonance beyond the field.

This celebration of the interweaving of design, innovation, sports culture, style, and storytelling allows us to repost our editorial focus devoted to Kappa’s relationship with football imagery, as well as its ancient and contemporary milestones. You can find our special report from the BasicGallery—an oasis of the ‘Omini’ applied to football—here.
